Stunning Holy Water Font, Silver With Gold Wash Plaque, Silver Surround Set Onto Green Onyx By Louis Octave Mattei, Crystal Font c 1895
A stunningly beautiful Holy Water Font, or Benitier as they are called here, in gorgeous green onyx. It is the plaque which accounts for its rarity as it was made by Louis Octave Mattei who was one of the most famous sculpteurs in France in his time. He was born in Vern-d'Anjou in 1877 and this work dates from around 1895. We are fortunate in France the the French government undertook a monumental work of cataloguing all the important works of art the exist in the country, partly because so much wonderful work was destroyed during the French revolution. It is why it is easy to see that many works by this famous sculptor adorn the best museums around the country.
The plaque itself depicts Jesus with the crown of thorns. Such a lovely design and so well made.
The font is made from hand cut crystal.
The surround of the benitier is of silver and a substantial ring is set into it the bronze back plate for wall hanging.
The benitier is in excellent condition. It measures 22 cm in height, 14 cm at its widest point and the onyx is 1.2 cm thick.
A truly remarkable and very beautiful piece.
