Our Lady Of Sorrows, Seven Sorrows Of The Virgin Mary By James Pradier In Plaster Circa 1840

A truly wonderful sculpture by the world famous sculptor James Pradier.

Sculpted in plaster this beautiful depiction of Our Lady Of The Seven Sorrows was made around 1840. It shows Our Blessed Mother The Virgin Mary with the seven swords that pierced her heart.

James Pradier (born Jean-Jacques Pradier, May 23, 1790 – June 4, 1852) was a Swiss-born French sculptor best known for his work in the neoclassical style.

Born in Geneva, Pradier was the son of a Protestant family from Toulouse. He left for Paris in 1807 to work with his elder brother, Charles-Simon Pradier, an engraver, and also attended the École des Beaux-Arts beginning in 1808. He won a Prix de Rome that enabled him to study in Rome from 1814 to 1818 at the Villa Médicts. Pradier made his debut at the Salon in 1819 and quickly acquired a reputation as a competent artist. He studied under Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres in Paris. In 1827 he became a member of the Académie des beaux-arts and a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts.

Works by him surround Napoleon's tomb, adorn the Arc De Triomphe, cathedrals and churches as well as museums across France, Switzerland and the rest of the world.

Most of Pradier's work was monumental but smaller examples exist as well and this is one of them.

Another was this work of a woman's head dated 1847 was sold on Proantic for 650 euros.

I know that this important work is worth much more than I am asking here but I would like someone of ordinary means to be able to own a piece by this remarkable artist. Also, I was able to aquire it from a charitable organisation in Pau in the south west of France at a sensible price.

It measures 16 centimetres in diameter.

This fabulous piece is in perfect condition with only a small amount of staining. The plaster from which it was carved is still crisp and the features are still perfect which is amazing as this lovely plaque has been around for almost two hundred years.

There is a bronze ring set into the top for wall hanging.
