Martre Dolorosa, Mother Of Sorrows Antique French Silver and Gold Washed Portable Shrine By Charles Desvergnes Circa 1890
Charles Desvergnes was born in Bellegarde, Frnce in 1860 in a community of craftsmen. It was by helping in the family bakery that the young Charles produced his first subjects. He sculpted shapes of flowers, animals and humans in cake batter and clay. Thanks to these early works, he was noticed by the local lord, and received the support of the director of the Beauc- Arts of Orleans. Charles Desvergnes was inspired throughout his career by multiple themes: busts, standing statues, but also fountains, vases, monuments and statues of the Virgin. Desvergnes is known abroad for his statues of Joan of Arc, one of which is in St Mary's Church in London and another in Iceland.
Medals by Desvergnes are extremely rare with one of Joan of Arc currently on sale for 950 euros.
On the front of this beautiful portable shrine is The Virgin Mary Mater Dolorosa or Our Lady Of Sorrows. The medal is in silver with gold wash highlights and is signed by Desvergnes with his initials. The medal is 4 centimetres in diameter.
This is set into a portico, also of silver with gold highlights. It measures 7 x 6 centimetres.
The whole is set onto a beautiful piece of green mottles onyx which measures 9.5 x 7 x 1 centimetres. On the rear is a bronze backing plate with integrated stand.
