Lourdes Souvenir Coffee Cups by Fontanille et Marraud of Limoges France, Perfect Condition, Circa 1943
These beautiful coffee cups made by the famous Limoges porcelain house Fontanille et Marraud are, of course, French coffee cups. When in France if you order just 'coffee' you are going to get a small strong coffee. That is what these lovely souvenir of Lourdes cups were designed for - so they are not big! The saucers measure 10 centimetres in diameter while the cups stand 4.5 centimetres tall and 4.5cm in diameter.
They are stunningly decorated in deep Burgundy red and 22 carat gold.
Made as souvenirs of a pilgrimage to the Holy Shrine at Lourdes they are of the finest French porcelain.
This porcelain decorating workshop was established in 1928 by Martial Fontanille, who partnered with Mr. Gandois until 1930, and then with his son-in-law, Maurice Marraud, from 1934 onwards. In 1936, they founded the company Fontanille et Marraud, and in 1942 acquired a neighboring porcelain factory (the former Pillivuyt factory, on Rue de l'Université) to supply this white porcelain decorating workshop.
The mark on the base shows that these stunning cups and saucers were made between 1936 and 1943.
Each is identical and each is perfect.
