Limoges Enamel 'The Bagpipe Player' after Phillipe Mercier by Pierre Bonnet, Master Enameller of France
This is a beautiful detail from a 1740 painting of a young bagpipe player by Philippe Mercier.
Mericer was a French painter and etcher, who lived principally and was active in England. He was born in Berlin of French extraction, the son of a Huguenot tapestry-worker. He studied painting at the Akademie der Wissenschaften of Berlin and later under Antoine Pesne, who had arrived in Berlin in 1710. Later, he traveled in Italy and France before arriving in London "recommended by the Court at Hannover" probably in 1716. He married in London in 1719 and lived in Leicester Fields. He was appointed principal painter and librarian to the Prince and Princess of Wales at their independent establishment in Leicester Fields, and while he was in favor he painted various portraits of the Royalties, and no doubt many of the nobility and gentry.
Pierre Bonnet worked at Limoges capital of the “Arts du Feu” for over twenty years. A former student of the Ecole des Beaux Arts, he was the recipient of many awards including the Meilleur Ouvrier de France. In 1955 he became President of the National Jury in Limoges and was awarded l’Ordre du Merite de l’Artisant Francais. He was considered a Master Enameller of his day.
This stunning Limoges enamel measures 18.5 x 21 centimetres including the frame and is in perfect condition. A rare portrait from Bonnet.
Because I supply water from the Holy Spring at Lourdes I am in Lourdes twice a week. Over the past year a shop there has begun to sell these wonderful Limoges enamels. They have one by Bonnet and it is a country scene and the price is - 3840 euros.
The beauty of these enamels is that they never age, never fade and are really difficult to damage so they remain perfect throughout the ages.
