La Pieta Statue in Gilded Plaster after Michelangelo by François-Dominique Monna of Toulouse Circa 1890

A really beautiful copy of Michelangelo's La Pieta in plaster but made to look like gilded bronze.

We are very fortunate in France because, after the devastation of The French Revolution, when so many chateau and works of art of all kinds were destroyed by the mobs, the French government undertook a massive work of detailing and registering every important work of art in France.

It is called l'Inventaire général du patrimoine culturel - the General Inventory of Cultural Heritage and the work continues today under the culture department.

François-Dominique Monna (1849-1907) is mentioned several times in the archives due to the superb work he has done for churches and cathedrals in France and this statue of La Pieta is by him. He began his workshop in Toulouse in 1887 and this piece would have been made around 1890.

The statue is beautifully detailed. As to be expected for a plaster statue that is around 120 years old, there are one or two scuffs but this only adds to the charm of the piece.

It stands 28 centimetres tall, is 20 centimetres wide and 14 centimetres deep so it is a large piece and it weighs 1.73 kilos.
