Antique Silver Cross By Penin of Lyon, Souvenir De Mission, French Silver Pendant Cross, Pilgrims Cross From 1880
To be honest, I actually bought an antique tin! A pretty little thing which promised all sorts of wonderful results for a wide variety of illnesses from a pharmacy in Paris. Now, this pharmacy , Pharmacie Principale H Canonne, had been going since the mid 19th century and I was intrigued by this little tin. Anyway, I bought it.
I opened it when I got home and was amazed and delighted to find this wonderful silver pendant cross inside. ven more surprised to find that it was made by the famous Penin family of Lyon.
These pendant crosses were given to pilgrims to commemorate their pilgrimage. Usually, though, they were made of bronze whereas this one is silver. As I found it at an antique fair in South West France I assume it was for the pilgrimage from France through Spain to the shrine of Saint James at Santiago De Compostela. It is called The Camino Tail and is 500 grueling miles long. It starts not far from me and the road that approaches it is guarded by an old Knights Templar fort which a friend of mine now lives in.
It seems a small reward for such an arduous journey but the rewards of that pilgrimage cannot be counted in coin or things but only in the spiritual reward for the pilgrim.
The cross is in perfect condition and measures 5cms by 3cms not including the bale. It weighs 3.9gms and has 'Souvenir De Mission' embossed on the rear.
