Antique Profession Crucifix Handmade, Cast Bronze Corpus Christi, Ebony Insert, 19th Century, 11.5 cms x 5.5 cms, Excellent Condition

This is an absolutely beautiful example of a 19th century profession crucifix that would have been worn by a nun or priest when taking their vows of profession. Often it would have been worn around the waist attached to a full rosary. Due to the size of this lovely crucifix it is clearly designed for a priest or a monk and would have then been hung on the wall of the priest house or monk's cell.

It is wonderfully detailed and the cast figure of Christ is exceptional.

The figure of Christ is bronze and would originally have been gilded and some of the gilding still remains. The crucifix itself is silvered metal. The inlay is ebony and as I found it at an antique fair in the Pyreneen mountains I believe it to have been made in France.

All of these old inlaid crucifixes from this period were made by hand and usually you can still see the grinding and file marks which are clearly evident all along the sides and at the top of the crucifix on its bail.

This exceptional piece measures 11.5 cms by 5.5 cms and weighs 49 grams.
