Antique Profession Crucifix, French, Handmade in Bronze Inlaid With Ebony Early 18th Century, Rare, 16 x 8.5 Centimetres
This is an absolutely beautiful example of a late 17th early 18th century Profession crucifix. Exquisite craftsmanship. The cross with the ebony inlay is of solid bronze, I had to clean it as it was allowed to become extremely dirty. The stunning Corpus Christi is made of a darker bronze with a beautiful patina of age and it creates a beautiful contrast with the brighter bronze.
It is wonderfully detailed and the figure of Christ is exceptional. This was made by a master craftsman. The inlay is ebony and although I found it at an antique fair in the Pyreneen mountains.
This stunning crucifix was made for a nun or preist as a gift at the time of taking their vows which is why it is called a Profession crucifix. It is completely hand made so could not have been mass rpoduced but has a number, 16518, on the rear. I beleive that this was probably made for a chaplain of the French army and was used during the Napoleonic wars.
This exceptional piece measures 16 x 8.5 centimetres so it is a very substantial piece.
