Janus bead refers to a bead with two sides with opposite representations: Young and old, live face and skull… On this rosary is a bead representing live Jesus on one side and death on the other.

It is related to a reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the passing nature of all earthly goods and pursuits and were used by nuns and priests as a daily reminder.

This is a very rare five decade rosary and the Janus head bead is of carved bone. The beads are of carved ebony.

Attached is a reliquary cross in bronze which contains relics of two martyrs, Saint Foy (Faith in English) and Saint Verecande (Saint Modeste in French)

Saint Foy was a young woman who lived in Agen in southwestern France. Widely known as a virgin martyr, Foy was a very popular saint across the Middle Ages.

Verena of Zurzach, mostly just called Saint Verena (c.  260 – c.  320) is an early Christian consecrated virgin and hermit. She is especially venerated in Switzerland, where her cult is attested in Bad Zurzach, the reported place of her burial, from at least the 5th century. She is recognized as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church as well as in the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Oriental Orthodox Churches.

The rosary measures 73 cm in length. The cross is 5 x 3 cm and the Janus Head bead is 2.5 x 3 cm.
