Antique Holy Water Font, French, Blue Plush, Bronze Back Plate, Spelter Corpus Christi, Napoleon III circa 1870
This stunning 19th century blue plush covered Holy Water Font, or 'Benitier' as it would be called here in France, is in simply fantastic condition. It must have spent its life in a church out of the sunlight as the plush is almost perfectly preserved which is so very unusual with this type of font. The backing too is in immaculate condition. The font itself is painted blue inside to protect the pewter font and to colour the water placed inside.
The cross is of bronze and the Corpus Christi is silvered spelter.
An absolutely splendid example of a 19th century Holy Water Font, one of the best I have ever seen.
It measures 26 x 15 centimetres
