Antique Golgotha Cross Crucifix Handmade in Bronze and Inlaid With Ebony Mid 18th Century

This is an absolutely beautiful example of an 18th century Golgotha crucifix that would have been worn by a nun or priest. Often it would have been worn around the waist attached to a full rosary.

It is wonderfully detailed and the figure of Christ is exceptional. This was made by a master craftsman. The inlay is ebony and although I found it at an antique fair in the Pyreneen mountains I believe it to have been made in Germany. The reason for this is the detail of the halo surrounding the head of Our Blessed Lord which is a motif used on German crucifixes in the 18th century.

All of these old inlaid crucifixes from this period were made by hand and usually you can still see the grinding and file marks which are clearly evident at the top of the crucifix on its bail and on its sides. This example is more rare as the ebony is set into a solid cross base.

The hill where Christ was crucified was called the hill of Golgotha or Golgotha (The Place of the Skull) long before the time of Christ. The ancients, the Jews believed it was called Golgotha because this was where the skull of Adam was buried. This tradition of Adam's skull became known as The Place of the Skull. This is depicted by the skull and crossbones which adorns the foot of this cross. On the reverse is the Sacre Coeur.

This exceptional piece measures 6.5 cm by 3.2 cm and weighs 13.8 g.
