Antique Golgotha Cross Crucifix Handmade With Bronze Corpus Christi, Straight Grained Ebony Mid-Late 18th Century, 11 cm by 5.5 cm

This is an absolutely beautiful example of an 18th century Golgotha crucifix that would have been worn by a nun or priest. Often it would have been worn around the waist attached to a full rosary. Due to its quality it is likely that it was a Profession Crucifix which means it would have been worn by the priest or nun when they were first ordained.

It is wonderfully detailed and the figure of Christ is exceptional. This was made by a master craftsman. I believe it to have been made in Germany. The reason for this is the detail of the halo surrounding the head of Our Blessed Lord which is a motif used on German crucifixes in the 18th century.

This is a very unusual and rare example as the cross is of straight grained ebony which is set into a beautiful, hand made, bronze frame. A genuine collector's piece. It is entirely hand made and you can still see the original file marks along the side of this beautiful cross.

The hill where Christ was crucified was called the hill of Golgotha or Golgotha (The Place of the Skull) long before the time of Christ. The ancients, the Jews believed it was called Golgotha because this was where the skull of Adam was buried. This tradition of Adam's skull became known as The Place of the Skull. This is depicted by the skull and crossbones which adorns the foot of this cross. On the reverse is the Sacre Coeur.

This exceptional piece measures 11 cm by 5.5 cm not including the bail and weighs 44.4 g.
