I love this ancient tripod altar piece. It is clearly hand made as evidenced by the file marks on the reverse and the hand panelling of the motif 'INRI' above the figure of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The figure itself is rough hewn and has a wonderful charm to its rustic character.

Very rare to find an article like this that I imagine was made by a local artisan for the altar of the local church or presbytery as its tripod design indicates it was made to stand flat against a wall. It is French as it has the Fleur De Lys on each arm of the cross.

Wherever it stood for several centuries must have been busy and it must have been much loved as the passage of many thousands of hands has worn the features quite smooth.

A rare and beautiful piece.

It measures 29 cm in height and 15 cm across.
