Antique Chapel Cross, Cast Bronze Corpus Christi By Francisco Escudero, Mounted On Straight Grained Ebony, Circa 1890
This beautiful chapel crucifix has a Corpus Christi of cast bronze which has been mounted onto a solid straight grained ebony cross.
It is truly a wonderful piece and in excellent condition.
Made in the late 19th century as a souvenir for one of the many millions of pilgrims to Lourdes. We ten to think of 'souvenirs' as tacky plastic things we buy on holiday but 'souvenir' in French means 'to remember'. In and around Lourdes, as many thousands of pilgrims visited over the many decades, as well as the many millions who passed by on their route to the tomb of Saint James in Spain, the best artisans in Europe set up to produce exquisite items to sell to the pilgrims so that they would remember their journey.
The Corpus Christi measures 13 cm by 9.5 cm and the cross is 30 cm by 16 cm by 1.2 cm and the whole piece weighs 327 grams.
The Corpus Christi was made by Francisco Xavier Escudero, who was born in Huesca in Spain in 1871, he was a sculptor and engraver of medals.
He exhibited at the Salon of French Artists in 1888 and obtained an honorable mention there in 1890. He also won a bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1900 for the marble group Winter or Invierno.
He produced mainly religious works.
