Large Antique Crucifix on Wooden Art Deco Mounting, Made From Wax Cast Plaster of Paris circa 1920s
I am delighted to list this beautiful wax cast plaster of paris cross as it is so very rare to find one in such excellent condition. It still has the lovely waxy feel from the original moulding and very little signs of its age other than the natural patina of the plaster. There is just a little damage to the knee area of Our Lord Jesus Christ but that just adds to the authenticity and charm.
This type of thorned cross was most often presented to missionaries prior to their leaving. I suspect that if I were to take this beautiful cross off its mountings, the name of the missionary would be inscribed on the back. It is mounted on a solid wood plaque which has then been wonderfully veneered. On the 'handles' on the side it is walnut. Cherry and rosewood have also been used to create a lovely effect and it would have hung proudly on the wall of the missionary for many years.
It is a wonderful casting taken from an original 17th or 18th century piece.
This wonderful cross measures 23.5cms long and 12.5cms wide. The mounting is 28cms tall and 22cms at its widest point. It can be wall hung or stand on a mantlepiece.
