This antique Our Lady of Lourdes medal is described as French FIX 22-carat rolled gold and dates to circa 1890. Measuring 2.5 × 2 cm, it comes with a gold-plated chain and is offered in excellent condition. The medal is rolled gold rather than solid gold.
Fix, Murat and Oria, companies founded in France in 1823, 1847 and 1867 respectively specialised in high quality rolled gold jewelry.This method involves pressing two sheets of gold onto a medal which is usually made of copper or bronze. With this method there is a lot more gold on a medal or brooch than normal gold plating. In fact companies that buy gold will not buy plated items but will buy Fix, Murat or Oria because of the high gold content. This is why there is a similar medal on Ruby Lane which sold for $165.
This beautiful Art Nouveau medal of Our Blessed Mother The Virgin Mary has the Grotto scene from Lourdes on the reverse and to enhance its esteem even more it was designed by the famous medal designer Tairac and it bears his signature on the reverse. Tairac who worked during the late nineteenth to early twentieth century for the finest companies such as Arthus Bertrand, Fix, Murat and Oria.
The medal is in excellent condition with no rubs or scuffs and is very large at 2.5 x 2 centimetres. In total, including the 19 centimetre chain, it weighs a full 6.1 grams.
