This framed document records a request made in March 1917 to Pope Benedict XV for an apostolic benediction on the marriage of Jeanne Montagné and Jean Milles. Sent by Jean Baptiste and Henri Montagné, it is described as having been returned with the benediction granted, bearing a Vatican seal and signature.

Jean Baptiste Montagné was Abbott and Master of The Chapel at the Famous St Severin Church in Paris. His brother, Henri, was Abbott and Curee of Coudons in the Diocese of Carcassonne, the startlingly beautiful medieval city in South West France.

Together they sent a letter, in beautiful handwriting, in March 1917 to Pope Benedict XV in Rome asking for an Apostolic Benediction for their cousin, Miss Jeanne Montagné, who was to be married to Mr Jean Milles.

The benediction was granted and the letter returned to the brothers with the seal and signature of The Pope. The brothers had it beautifully framed by an atelier in Paris. The frame on its own is a work of art and it has been faced and edged in very fine bone.

Then it was given to the happy couple on the day of their wedding.

This apostolic benediction is extremely rare as, firstly, it was asked for and granted during WWI and secondly because it bears the signature of Pope Benedict XV who was only Pope for seven years between 1914 and 1922.
