Antique Catholic Rosary, Ebony Beads, 5 Pilgrimage Medals, Bronze Trefoil Cross, 56 Centimetres Long, Circa 1840

A rare and very special 19th century catholic rosary. Each of the ebony beads has been hand mounted on an ornate bronze chain.

There is a lot of history in this beautiful rosary. I bought it in Spain but it was made in France evidenced by the bronze link medal which is a copy of the original Miraculous Medal' designed by Adrien Vachette in 1832 to commemorate the vison of St Catherine Labourer in 1830, which is the date at the base of the medal. As it is so close to the original medal I beleive that this rosary was made not long after 1832.

The rosary itself measure 56 cms in length.

The trefoil cross is made of bronze and measures 6 by 4 cms. I have never before seen a cross like this with 11 heads, which may refer to the apostles. Perhaps someone knows the significance of this and will let me know.

To say this beautiful rosary is 'much travelled' would be an understatement.
The first of the pilgrimage medals is from the basilica of Our Lady of Desemparados in Valencia in Spain and it is made of pure aluminium which would have been enornously expensive in the middle of the 19th century.

The second is a small silver medal from The Sanctuary of Saint Joseph of the Mountain in Barcelona.

Third is a stunning silver medal with Saint Michael of Liria on one side and Sait Francis of Assisi on the other.

Fourth is a miraculous medal in silver which is presumable from Lourdes and has the Marian symbol on the reverse with the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

Fianlly a medal of Saint Anthony of Padua which has the intials A.M. for Auguste Maillard. This medal was collected at the caves of Brive near Limoges in France where Saint Anthony spent a lot of his time.

A stunning and rare rosary.
