This French dowry sheet and matching bolster cover date to circa 1920 and are made from métis, a linen-and-cotton blend. Both feature a PC monogram and come from a family home in the Hautes-Pyrénées in southwest France. Unused as bedding, both pieces have been washed and ironed once; one mark remains on the sheet, as explained below.
Antique French linen is rightly prized throughout the world for its quality and durability and, of course, because when these sheets wer woven it was with a purely organic material and process.
This beautiful sheet and bolster cover set is stunning and of the highest quality. Both the sheet and the bolster cover have the same delightful monogram which is P.C.
The sheet is made from Metis which is a mix of 85% pure linen and 15% cotton. Metis was developed in the early 20th century in France as an 'easy iron' material and was extremely popular for dowry presents as it was much easier to embroider than just pure linen. This sheet was completely unused but had some storage stains as it had lain in a cupboard for many decades so I have washed and ironed it. It still retains the stiffness and buff colour of top quality metis and over time will become soft and pure white.
The bolster cover is also metis and was also unused and has also been washed and ironed once. There is still one mark on the sheet but it is not a storage mark, it is where I managed to put the foot of the ironing board on it whilst ironing.
The sheet is shown on my four poster bed which is a UK King Size 60 inches wide by 72 inches long so as to give you an idea of the actual size of the sheet.
Provenance is everything with any antiques and I am delighted to know the full history of all this lovely linen as it all came from the same family. Other items are listed as well.
This sheet and cover were made as a wedding present for a couple from a very wealthy family as they must have cost a fortune when they were originally made.
This is a truly beautiful sheet set and comes from one of the finest houses in the Haute Pyrenees region of South West France. I know it is a dowry set because the family I bought it from told me so. They and their ancestors have lived in our region for well over two hundred years and they were dispensing with the collection of linen they had so called me and I bought it all so there are other items from the same source which are either already listed or will be listed soon and all have the same P.C. monogram in various forms.
