Virgin Mary Praying, Spanish Polychromed Plaster Relief on Board, 17th/18th Century, 50 x 40 x 14 Centimetres
A relief is a sculpture in which the image protrudes from the background, in essence making it both two-dimensional and three-dimensional. Bas-relief, or low relief, means the image is only slightly raised. Alto-relief, or high relief, means the image has much more depth and at times could be almost completely in the round.
This stunning plaster relief of The Virgin Mary at prayer is Alto Relief as it stands 14 centimetres above the surface of the ancient board to which it is attached. The head of The Virgin Mary is surrounded with a halo of gilded wire.
It came from an ancient family in Madrid in Spain and required some restoration, not least in order to completely remove the woodworm from the base.
The sculpture and painting are beautiful as can be seen from the photographs and the statue itself is in lovely condition for its age. It had been in the possession of the family since the 18th century and could easily be from the 17th century.
Naturally, this beautiful and rare item will ship by carrier as standard and so could you please attach your telephone number to the order.
