Silvered Bronze Miraculous Medal, Congregation Of The Children Of Mary Mid 19th Century, Uninscribed

The Congregation of the Children of Mary was established in response to Our Lady's command given to St. Catherine Laboure in July of 1830. The Blessed Mother wanted a new confraternity established in the Church that would be linked with the gift of the Miraculous Medal. Fr. Aladel, St. Catherine's confessor, was charged with establishing the work which, at first, was limited to only the orphans and students cared for by the Sisters of Charity

The Miraculous Medal (French: Médaille miraculeuse), also known as the Medal of the Immaculate Conception, is a medal, the design of which was originated by Saint Catherine Labouré following her vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The patina of the bronze is wonderful and the detail of the medal on both sides is almost perfect although there is a little discoloration of the bronze which will need some cleaning.

The front shows Our Blessed Mother The virgin Mary in the pose typical of a miraculous medal and the inscription in Latin is 'Monstra Te Esse Matrem' which means 'Show Thyself A Mother'. On the reverse is an emblem featuring two stems of lilies curving around a radiant star.

A rare and unique medal. These medals were made to present to a child after he or she had completed the six months of virtue and was about to join the group. It originally would have had a blue ribbon. The name of the child would then be inscribed on the reverse and there is a space for this. This medal is rare because it has not been inscribed, therefore, never used.

It measures 3.4 cm by 2.8 cm and weighs 9.8g
