Giant Wooden Bead Rosary, Full Five Decade Wooden Rosary With 19th Century Olive Wood Mother of Pearl Inlaid Cross
Contrary to popular belief these large wooden rosaries were not made to wear but rather as a wall decoration or to drape a statue or reliquary. I have often seen statues in churches with these rosaries.
They were made in the 19th and early part of the 20th centuries as souvenirs of various shrines. This one was for the shrine of The Virgin Mary at Lourdes in South West France.
The inscription on the link medal reads 'Pure Heart Of Mary Protect Us'.
Attached to this rosary is an early 19th Century cross hand made from oilve wood and inset with mother of pearl which represents the 14 Stations of the Cross. This is very unusual and would not have been original to this rosary which was probably made at the latter part of the 19th century. Almost certainly this would have been a family heirloom which was then later added to the rosary. Possibly because the original wooden cross broke.
In any event the pendant cross is worth more than the whole rosary as finding these in such good condition is very rare. The cross measures 15.5 x 7.5 centimetres.
Each bead is 2cms in diameter, the cross is 5 cm by 3 cm and the whole rosary is 1.2 metres long.
These rosaries are becoming more rare as many people have bought them just to use the beads. Please do not do that with this one. If you need more beads just ask as I have another where the cross was damaged.
