Antique French Rosary Solid Silver Art Nouveau From Lourdes France Five Decade Late 19th Century
The whole of this area of Europe is very catholic but it is still unusual to find rosaries of this quality,
and this is no exception. Solid silver and hallmarked it has seven medallions of the Virgin Mary with the head of Jesus Christ on the reverse of each one with the crown of thorns.
The whole rosary measures 43 centimetres in length. The central medal is 1 centimetre in diameter and all the others are 7 mm. The beautifully detailed silver cross is 3 x 1.8 centimetres.
Each bead is hand blown art glass in a beautiful deep ruby red. The whole piece weighs just 21.5 grams
The story of Lourdes is well known. Between February 11 and July 16, 1858, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared eighteen times to fourteen-year-old Bernadette Soubirous in that small town located in the foothills of the Pyreneen mountains of southern France.
Bernadette was born on January 7, 1844, the eldest of six children of Francis Soubirous and Louise Caserot. She was a delicate girl who suffered from asthma and cholera. She could neither read nor write and spoke only the Burgundian dialect of her area. Her family was sinking into poverty, and the day the first apparition took place she went to gather firewood along the bank of the River Gave to help her mother.
