Portable Stations Of The Cross Shrine, Book Form, 14 Pewter Medallions Set On Leather, Gold Blocked, Beautiful Condition. Silver Corpus Christi with Gilded Halo
This is a stunning example of a portable shrine showing the 14 stations of the cross beautifully bound in tan leather which has been extensively gold blocked.
I have seen several examples over the years but they are invariably damaged, particularly along the bindings but there is no such problem here.
On the front is the symbol JHS for Our Lord Jesus Christ. This is a typical Catholic variation as usually the symbol is IHS or, more rarely, YHS. Also usually the symbol is above three nails to represent the nails used in Our Lord's crucifixion. Here that is not the case and I have not been able to find another symbol like this one.
The reverse is also gold blocked and here it has the initials G.K.L.P. on the right and a crowned R on the right. In France the closed crown above an R is the symbol of the House of Bourbon who were the kings of France, Spain and Italy right up until 1861. As this beautiful stations of the cross was made around the mid 19th century it is quite possible that it was for a member of the House of Bourbon although I do not know who GKLP is.
Each of the tablets depicting the 14 stops made by Jesus on the way to Calvary is pewter while the Corpus Christi on the wooden cross is solid silver with a gilded halo. The interior of this beautiful item is virtually perfect and the quality is superb.
When closed it measures 7 cm tall x 8.5 cm wide x 1.5 cm deep.
