French Village Dance Scene, Featuring A Cabrette Player, Circa 1910, Excellent Condition, In A La Ruche Box
Such a pretty village scene which has been beautifully carved with very fine detail. It features two couples dancing while a cabrette player plays to the right.
The cabrette was a bellows blown bagpipe that was typical of the Auvergne region and was popular in Parisian cafes. Having heard someone play the cabrette I can only imagine that these villagers were stone deaf :)
Hearing afflictions aside, the detail in the features and costumes of the dancing figures is exceptional as is the tree and the house in the background.
A very fine piece of work.
It is housed in a pretty gilded frame.
It is not signed but it was in a box which bears the label of La Ruche which is a city of artists in the 15th arrondissement in Paris which was founded in 1902.
This lovely plaque has spent its entire life in the box since it was purchased by one of the directors of Le Bon Marche. It has no hook on the rear to hand it and so it was never hung. Which is the reason it is in such spectacular condition.
