Antique Hemp Potash Sacks, Two French Heavy Hemp Sacks 46 x 24 Inches, Circa 1920, Used, Lovely Rustic Sacks From Potash Mines At Alsace

Theses are beautiful heavyweight hemp sacks that measure a full 48 inches long and 24 inches wide so each sack is almost 1.5 square yards of fabulous antique hemp. Each sack has the emblem of the Potash Mines at Alsace printed on them. Each sack weighs 610 g.

I have four sets available and am happy to consider a discount for buying all four.

I cannot imagine that there are many farmers or millers out there who are looking for hemp sacks so I am pretty sure that these will be used for covering pillows or chairs or stools or something like that and this fabric is brilliant for the purpose as it is almost indestructible.

These sacks had a very hard life carrying huge weights of potash all over the world from the mines in Alsace in France. Until the discovery of potash in Alsace in 1904 there was only one source of it in the world and that was in Germany and as Alsace belonged to Germany at the time they controlled the world wide supply. After WWI Alsace was returned to France which is why these sacks date from around 1920 as the printing on them is in French.

They were hand woven and hand stitched so they had to be extremely hard wearing and last a long time as they were time consuming and expensive to replace. Therefore, to extend their life, they were stitched and patched when worn or torn.

The same goes for these beautiful sacks. They have darns and patches in places but that just adds to the charm. That said there is pleanty of usable material left that will last a lifetime.

As each sack weighs 610 g the combined weight including packaging is 1.3 kilos.

Shipping to Europe is 13.50 euros per pair by carrier with tracking. Two sets would be 15.50. Three sets 17.00 euros and four sets 18.00

To the USA and the rest of the world it is 24 euros with tracking for one set. 34 euros for two sets. 40 euros for three sets and 46 euros for four sets.
