Holy Water Font, Antique Pewter Stoup, Crowned Rose Insignia On Base, Circa 1860
This wonderful old 'Benitier' as they are called in France, or Holy Water Font as we would know it, has been much loved and seen much in its very long life. It is not in absolutely perfect condition but considering it is made of such a soft metal as pewter, it is in remarkable condition. Als, very unusually, it still has the lid for the font.
Dating from the middle part of the 19th century I believe it was made in Avignon in France as I have seen two similar fonts from the same area. I should say that one, which is almost identical (although not in such good condition) is currently on sale for $270 and the other which is similar, but not identical, is on sale at 280 euros.
I was very fortunate to find this at a chateau sale and secured it at a good price so I can offer it at a much more affordable price than the other two.
This beautful Holy Water Font measures 18.5 cm tall. The stoup itself is 7 cm tall and has a diameter of 6 cm. The cross is 8 cm wide and the whole piece weighs 204.1 g.
