Antique Dutch Holy Water Font by Petrus Regout of Maastricht, 19th Century, Corpus Christi In Bisque circa 1850

A rare and beautiful Holy Water Font made in Holland in the mid 19th century.

The Corpus Christi and the INRI plaque are made from Bisque porcelain, unusual in itself, particularly because both are still in perfect condition. The Corpus Christi is exquisitely made.

It is set onto an oak cross with very fine bone on the right and left.

At the foot of the cross is a lovely porcelain font with JHS on the front. The font is large and deep.

Petrus Dominicus Laurentius Regout was born in Maastricht in Holland in 1801. The Royal Sphinx factory was established by Petrus Regout in 1834. It was located in Maastricht, Holland. First, he started a glass factory. Two years later production of pottery began. Pottery production was initially concentrated on so called faience commune - simple pottery for a local market.

This stunning font is neither faience nor simple so would have been made around 1850 at the time that Napoleon III was on the throne of France.

I have been researching since acquiring this beautiful font and, while the factory did make fonts, they have all been smal and designed to hang on a wall. I can find no example of an altar Holy Water Font so this may have been made as a 'one off' for an important client which would make it very rare indeed.

The mark on the back was used by the factory from 1836 until 1880 but Regout himself died in 1878.

The whole piece stands 35 cm tall and is 18 cm at its widest point. The porcelain font is 18x12x7 centimetres while the beautiful Corpus Christi is 18x9 centimetres.

The Corpus Christi measures 10cms by 7cms
