Due to their age examples of these classically designed French wooden altar crosses are often damaged or full of woodworm holes or the bone ends are chipped or lost. This one is in excellent condition.
Over the decades a little of the original paint has chipped in a couple of places but otherwise it is excellent. Please note the photographs.
I have not seen another example of this type of Napoleon III altar cross that it this ornate. A really lovely old cross.
The Corpus Christi itself is made from silvered spelter. This altar cross dates from around 1870. All the embellishments are from silvered metal.
This wonderful old cross stands 25 cm tall and is 11 cm wide. The tips and beads are porcelain.
