Antique Coral Rosary, French, Made By Adolphe Penin, Hallmarked, Vermeil Cross Medals and Chain, 32 cm Lady's or Child's
A beautiful and delicate genuine coral rosary made around 1900 by Adolphe Penin of the famous Penin family of Lyon.
Each bead is a delicate coral and the whole rosary is vermeil. Vermeil is a high-quality jewelry material used in fine jewelry and craftsmanship, composed of a base made from sterling silver—covered with a thick layer of gold applied via electroplating. Unlike simple gold plating, vermeil must meet strict standards to be legally recognized, ensuring durability and value.
Each bead measures approximately 3 mm, I say approximately because they are natural coral so are not exact sizes, and each has been hand shaped.
This is a full five decade rosary.
In total length it is 32 cm. The cross measures 3 x 2 cm and the link medal of The Virgin Mary is 1 cm in diameter. The cross and link medal are both hallmarked with the crab mark which is the small guarantee mark for silver in France.
A stunningly beautiful rosary in excellent antique condition.
It is light and delicate so it is likely it was made for a woman or a child. The reverse of the link medal is blank so could easily be engraved for a communion present.
