On the front of this stunning solid silver medal is the figure of Christ flanked by two angels each side. The inscription above is 'to remember 1st communion'

At the base in Latin is Ecce Panis Angelorium - Befold the bread of angels.

On the reverse there is a shield at the top with SS engraved in it and either side the inscription reads A ete baptise - has been baptised and the date in the ribbon below is 21st March 1867.

!867 in France was a very significant year. Napoleon III anounced a number of liberal reforms and on 10th April Vitor Duruy introduced legislation for the education of females.

Below this is another insciption - 'Has made the 1st Communion' and the date in the ribbon is 2nd June 1878.

Below this is ' Has been confirmed' and the date in the ribbon is 17th June 1878.

This young person lived through turbulent times in France. Napoleon IIIs defeat at the hands of the Prussians which caused the fall of the second empire and saw the birth of the third republic on 4th September 1870. The reparations exacted by the victorious Prussins saw France lose Alsace and Lorraine.

Forgive me but I just love the stories that so many of these beautiful old medals could relate if only they could talk.

The medal measures 3.5 cm in diameter and weighs 9 grams. It is hallmarked for solid 925 silver on the bale.
