Limoges Enamel Of The Virgin Mary With Jesus by Marguerite Sornin, Detail From Stained Glass Windows At Bourges Cathedral circa 1930

This beautiful enamel of Our Blessed Mother The Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus is signed SM for Marguerite Sornin (1883-1974) and dates from around 1930.

This is a beautiful example of the quality of enamel paintings produced in the early part of the 20th century by the master enamellers of Limoges. It has been extraordinarily difficult to photograph as the glaze is deep and brilliant and does not photograph well. However, in the photo you can see the curve of the copper onto which the enamel has been done.

The stained glass windows of Bourges cathedral are renowned throughout the world and rightly so as they are truly magnificent. http://www.medievalart.org.uk/bourges/index_summary.htm

This wonderful enamel takes a detail from one of the windows and it is beautifully done onto curved copper.

It is impossible to really explain in words or photographs just how stunning a piece this is in real life.

Each colour in these Limoges enamels has to be applied separately then fired then on to the next colour. Enamels can take between 16 and 22 firings, a long and laborious process that has to be right first time each time. No wonder they are so sought after.

It is set onto linen with an oak frame.

The enamel measures 16 cm by 12 cm and the frame is 30 cm by 24 cm and is 2 cm deep.

Please study the photographs carefully as they form an integral part of the sale description.
