Antique Hymn Book, French 1819, Chants Diverse, Leather Bound, Hymns in Latin, Block Print Music, 406 Pages, Rare Book.

This wonderful old hymn book was printed in 1819 by order of Jean-François de Montillet de Grenaud who was Archbishop of Auch, famous as the birthplace of d'Artgnan, in the south west of France from 1742-1776. It was printed by Mme V Duprat, printer to the king.

There are 406 pages and the book is complete with all the pages easy to turn and read, assuming you read Latin, as all the hymns are in Latin. However the foreword and titles are in French.

This would have been a rare book even at the time of printing as only 1/3rd of the French population in 1819 could read at all and far fewer could read Latin. Most people learned the hymns and music by rote after many years of attending mass. So this book would not exactly have been the 'Harry Potter' of its time.

The music uses the system of Mensural Notation that had been adopted in France from the late 13th century and did not start to change to the modern system until late 17th century but it was still used in this book printed in 1819. Presumably because the frist editions of the book were printed during the time of Jean-François de Montillet between 1742 and 1766.

There is a section at the back of the book numering 71 pages that is dedicated to Method- To easily teach and learn plainsong and that, as a musician, I found fascinating and I think it would be invaluable to choirs around the world who study and sing plainchant.

The leather binding is still in remarkably good condition with just a little water staining to the front cover.
