Antique Fine Hemp Sheet, French Dowry Sheet, Stunning Embroidery Mono HL, Flat Under Sheet 220 x 210 centimetres, Perfect Condition, Circa 1860
This is a beautiful and rare sheet. It is made from very fine hemp, which in itself is unusual as the time and effort required to process the rough hemp fibre into a cloth of this quality would have been enormous and hugely expensive at the time that this sheet was made.
But what is also unusual is that the hems top and bottom have been machine stitched and not done by hand. So, the sheet was made in the late 19th century but not finished until the early 20th century as if it had been finished when it was made the hemming would all have been hand done.
This beautiful sheet has never been used and is in perfect condition. It has that very pale oatmeal colour of hemp as opposed to the grey white of pure linen and will continue to soften over the years and give many many years of wear.
The sheet has small ladderwork across the top and the most beautiful hand embroidered monogram H.L.
It came from the chateau at Serignac near Agen in the Occitanie region of France.
Hemp is also a fabulous material because, when this cloth was first woven it was done completely organically. Modern hemp is almost always processed chemicaly as otherwise the processing of the fibres would take too long and cost too much.
As mentioned before the sheet has never been used so, unlike other sheets in my shop, I have not washed it. It has been stored for many decades in a cupboard so has some light storage stains. These will come out with an overnight soak in hot water with a couple of capfulls of sodium percarbonate. Should you prefer I will soak and launder the sheet before sending it. Please let me know.
