Antique Sacred Heart Medal with The Christogram on The Reverse by Ludovic Penin of Lyons France circa 1850
This is a rare medal made by Adolphe Penin of Lyons France an engraver of such note that several examples of his work and later when he joined with Jean Baptiste Poncet to form the firm Penin Poncet are housed in major museums around the world including the prestigious British Museum in London.
The Penins from Lyons, France were a prolific family of medallists over four generations and started signing medals in 1830 to the present day. The medallist here is Ludovic Penin (1830-1868).
The designer of this beautiful medal was L Lasserre, a brilliant medalist and sculptor who also worked with the famous Alphonse Augis of Augis of Lyon whose work since the 1830s has been synonymous with superb quality. This is no exception. Beautifully design and made, you can still see the fine file marks on the sides and reverse where Lasserre finished it. It was made by the famous house of Penin and is marked AP for Adolphe Penin.
The medal measures 2 cms in diameter and weighs 3.3 grams
