Rare 15 Decade Nun's Rosary, Opaline Hail Mary Beads and Steel Our Father Beads, Large Bronze Cross and Link Medal, Lourdes Souvenir 18th C
This beautiful rosary has been around for a very long time as the original rosary was made sometime in the 18th century as the links and link medal are typical of that era and it has 1858 on the link medal but that refers to the date of the apparition at Lourdes.
15 decade rosaries were worn by nuns and priests around the waist. This one would have been made for a nun as it has pretty blue opaline beads for the 'Hail Mary' beads and bright steel for the 'Our Father' beads' One of the steel beads ahd a small piece missing due to so many prayers over the decades but the rosary still works perfectly.
The chain is intricately made with copper.
Each of the opaline beads is 80mm in diameter while the steel beads are 1.2 centimetres in diameter.
The ornate bronze cross measures 8 x 5.5 centimetres and the bronze link medal is 2.5 x 2 centimetres. On one side of the link medal is the basilica of Our Lady of Lourdes with the date 1858 and on the other is the grotto scene.
It was made in one of the many artisan ateliers that abound around Lourdes
In total this wonderful rosary measures 140 cms in length and is in excellent condition.
Since taking the priginal photos I have cleaned and polished each of the steel beads. A painstaking but rewarding task.
