This Art Deco bronze sculpture of Jesus Christ by Maria Caullet Nantard dates to circa 1925 and is mounted on an oak base. Weighing 650 g, it is a substantial devotional piece with the artist’s sculptural detail.

I recently had another statue like this by Caullet Nantard and when I saw this one at a recent antique fair I just could not resist it.

Maria Caullet Nantard was born in Lyon in France in 1876 and first exhibited at the Exhibition of French Artists in Paris in 1907 and obtained a gold medal that year. A brilliant sculptor and painter she went on to exhibit many times between 1931 and 1939.

Pieces by her command very high prices and a small statue recently sold at auction for €299.

This wonderful sculpture of Jesus Christ is exceptional. Nantard worked in several mediums as she was both a painter and sculptor.

The French are very proud of their artistic heritage and the government has catalogued every piece that they consider of great artistic merit on their heritage site. Maria Caullet Nantard has several mentions in that catalogue.

This beautiful statue is mounted onto an oak base and it measures 6.25 by 4.74 inches and weighs 650g so it is a substantial piece.
