Everything that Le Bon Marche did was of the highest quality and here they have engaged the services of one of the finest artists of hit time to create a long series of postcards that were sold in the shop.

Henri Gervèse (born Charles Marie Joseph Millot; 1880–1959) was a French naval officer, painter, illustrator, and poster artist. Born in Vesoul and dying in Buenos Aires, he served in the French Navy, including campaigns in China, Vietnam, and the Dardanelles, before being officially appointed Painter of the Navy (Peintre de la Marine) in 1921. Artistic Style: Gervèse is known for combining maritime art with humor, creating posters, postcards, and drawings for magazines like Le Rire and Fantasio.

  • Career: After leaving the military in 1923, he worked for the Compagnie des Chargeurs Réunis in Argentina, illustrating life for sailors in Asia and South America. Legacy: His works include military illustrations, nautical scenes, and caricatures, with a major retrospective exhibition held in Besançon in early 2025.
