We tend to think of 'souvenirs' as pretty tacky things we pick up at seaside holidays but that is not the meaning here. Souvenir, in France simply means 'to remember'. For centuries the best artisans across Europe settled along the Pilgrim Route that extended from past Germany to the shrine of Saint James at Santiago de Compostela in Southern Spain.
This beautiful cross was created for that stream of pilgrims visiting the shrine at Lourdes. It is made from silvered bronze with a cast bronze Corpus Christi that was originally gold washed and some of that still exists.
