A stunning portrait of The Virgin Mary by Camille Fauré master enameller of France in a beautiful frame and in perfect condition.

Camille Fauré was a celebrated artist from the early 19th century. He had his workshop in Limoges from where he worked for almost 5 decades and went on to become one of the most famous enamel artists of his time. His work exhibited at the 1925 International Exhibition in Paris gave name to the Art Deco style.

He is best known for his geometric designs and his gorgeous vases so it is very rare to find a portrait of The Virgin Mary by him.

This is a beautiful example of the quality of enamel paintings produced in the early part of the 20th century by the master enamellers of Limoges. It has been extraordinarily difficult to photograph as the glaze is deep and brilliant and does not photograph well.

Added to that the copper on which the enamelling was done is shaped to the features of The Virgin Mary. It is stunning to look at close up but a nightmare to photograph.

Each colour in these Limoges enamels has to be applied separately then fired then on to the next colour. Enamels can take between 16 and 22 firings, a long and laborious process that has to be right first time each time. No wonder they are so sought after.

This magnificent enamel is exquisite even very close up, an absolute masterpiece. The enamel itself measures 9.5 x 7.5 centimetres and including the frame is 18 x 16 x 2 centimetres.
