Souvenir Card Set from Le Bon Marche - Visits By Tsar Nicholas II in 1901 and 1902, King of Spain 1913 and Funeral of King Edward VII
A very rare set in excellent condition from the personal collection of Eugene Dubillon director of Le Bon Marche.
Tsar Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna visited France in 1901 to reinforce the Franco-Russian Alliance; unlike the 1896 trip which featured Paris and the Alexander III Bridge foundation stone, the 1901 itinerary avoided the capital due to anarchist threat risks, focusing instead on northern and northeastern cities.
There was no visit in 1902, however, a commemorative bronze medal created by Louis Eugêne Mouchon titled "To Commemorate the Visit of the Tsar Nicholas II and the Tsaritsa to Paris in 1902." This artwork was created in 1902 to honor the previous year's visit, not to document a trip in 1902.
Therefore this souvenir card giving the date 1902 is extremely rare as that visit did not actually happen and the souvenir card was withdrawn.
Both show Tsar Nicholas with the French President Émile Loubet. Interestingly this card was printed by the world famous printers J.E. Goosens of Brussels in Belgium.
The cards measure 28 x 21.5 centimetres.
The third card is a souvenir of the visit of Alphonse XIII, King of Spain, to France in 1913. King Alfonso XIII of Spain made a state visit to Paris, where he was welcomed by French President Raymond Poincaré. The visit included a formal greeting at the Bois de Boulogne station and a carriage ride through the city, accompanied by Antoine Beaudemoulin, the head of the French president's military staff. This event was widely covered by the French press, including the front page of the newspaper Le Petit Journal, which described the visit as a "first-range social event."
This card measures 22 x 17 centimetres.
Finally a small booklet produced by Le Bon Marche to commemorate the funeral of King Edward VII of The United Kingdom in 1910.
King Edward had previously traveled to Paris and Vincennes as the guest of President Émile Loubet (May 1–4). This trip, which he undertook largely on his own initiative without Cabinet advice, was instrumental in shifting French public opinion and creating the diplomatic atmosphere necessary for the Entente Cordiale signed in 1904.
This important set will ship with full international tracking as standard and will be accompanied by a hand signed letter from Bruno Dubillon, great grandson of Euegen Dubillon.
The booklet measures 18.7 13.7 centimetres and has 8 pages.
