Holy Water Font by Bouasse-Lebel & Soufflot, Silver Plaque by André Pierre Salès circa 1895 Excellent Condition 32 x 20 Cm

A stunningly beautiful and rare Holy Water Font, or Benitier as they are called here, in gorgeous pale streaked onyx.

The plaque itself depicts The Virgin Mary holding Christ and it was designed by André Pierre Salès and bears his signature . The inscription to the right is Dei Mater Alma which is a line taken from the"Ave maris stella" (Latin for 'Hail, star of the sea') which is a medieval Marian hymn, usually sung at Vespers. It was especially popular in the Middle Ages and has been used by many composers as the basis of other compositions.

The plaque is silver while the columns and halo have been gilded.

The font is made from hand cut crystal.

This all has an ormolu surround as does the font itself. It sits onto a magnificent piece of onyx which has a bronze back plate.

Unusualy this beautiful Holy Water Font can be wall hung but also has a bronze stand inset at the rear so that it can be free standing.

The benitier is in excellent condition. It measures 32 cm in height, 20 cm at its widest point and the onyx is 1.2 cm thick. The plaque alone measures 14.2 cm by 10.5 cm.

A truly remarkable and very beautiful piece.
