Folk Art Carving, Dutch May 1945, The Sermon on the Mount, Lacquered Oak Wall Plaque 18 x 41 Centimetres

Such a beautiful and poignant carving which was livongly and painstakingly created by a Dutch artisan in May 1945.

It shows Jesus Christ giving the Sermon on the Mount to a sea of followers.

The Sermon on the Mount is the sermon that Jesus gave in Matthew chapters 5-7. Matthew 5:1-2 the reason it is known as the Sermon on the Mount: "Now when He saw the crowds, He went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to Him, and He began to teach them..."

The Sermon on the Mount is the most famous sermon Jesus ever gave, perhaps the most famous sermon ever given by anyone.

What the sermon tells us is simply how to live a life that is dedicated to and pleasing to God, free from hypocrisy, full of love and grace, full of wisdom and discernment.

A part of the sermon are The Beatitudes and one of those is:

Blessed are the merciful and it is these words in Dutch that are carved into this lovely plaque.

It was in May 1945 that the German forces in Holland surrendered to the allies and I can only imagine that a Dutch artisan felt moved to create this plaque as an entreaty to the victors to remember the words of Jesus Christ.
