Very Rare Christian Pendant Medal By Ludovic Penin of Lyons, Saint Francis De Sales With Saint Jane Francis Chantal Circa 1860

This beautiful silver medal was made by Ludovic Penin who was the second in the generation of the famous family of medallists from Lyon in France. He was the son of Marius and the great grandfather of Adolphe Penin.

Ludovic was born in 1830 and died in 1868 aged just 36. It is one reason that medals by him are so rare and command such high prices. He was an exceptional medallist and was awarded the title of Pontifical Engraver - engraver to The Pope in 1864.

This stunningly beautiful medal was made around 1860.

On one side is Saint Francis De Sales with the inscription 'Saint Francis De sales, Doctor of the church, Pray for Us. At the base is the signature L Penin of Lyon.

On the other side is Saint Jane Francis Chantal seated in the centre surrounded by people in prayer and the inscription is in latin which translates to 'Together with one accord in prayer'.

It is fitting that these two saints are together on this beautiful medal as Saint Chantal met Saint Francis de Sales in Dijon in France when her father invited her to listen to the preaching of the then Bishop of Geneva. They became good friends and De Sales became her mentor.

A copy of this medal is in The British Museum in London

The medal measures 2.6 centimetres in diameter and is in exceptional condition.
It weighs 7 grams and will ship with a new silver chain.
